Selecting A Diamond

The Diamond is composed of pure carbon that has been crystallized under enormous heat and pressure from deep within the earth. Diamond is the hardest known naturally occurring substance known to man. It has a hardness of 10 on the MOHS Table of Hardness. The name Diamond is derived from the Greek word "adamas" which means unconquerable. This gem is mostly found transparent and colorless. However, it is found in various yellows, pinks, cognac, browns, blues, and black. Prior to the mid-nineteenth century, diamonds were worn only by men. Diamonds were once considered a talisman against phantoms and nightmares and were also supposed to give courage and virtue to soldiers in battle.

Diamond Guide Color:

Colors darker than the Z shade, like Canary Yellow/Golden, are called Fancy/Vivid colors, and may be valued higher than even a D color diamond. Fancy/Vivid colors like Blue/Pink/Red/Green etc. are even rarer to find and therefore more valuable than white color diamonds.

Clarity:

F - IF   F: Flawless. These diamonds show no inclusions or imperfections of any sort. IF: Internally Flawless. These diamonds have no inclusions when examined by an experienced grader using 10X magnification.
VVS1-VVS2 Very, Very Slightly Included. These diamonds contain very minute inclusions that are difficult even for experienced graders to see under 10X magnification.
VS1 - VS2      Very Slightly Included. These diamonds contain tiny inclusions that are difficult to locate and only a trained eye looking through a 10X magnification can pinpoint the inclusions in this category.
SI1 - SI2         Slightly Included. These diamonds contain minor inclusions that are noticeable to an experienced grader under 10X magnification, but finding flaws in this category with the naked eye is difficult, and even more so in mounted stones.
I1 - I2 - I3      Included. These diamonds contain inclusions that may or may not be easily seen by the naked eye. The flaws such as large feathers or large included crystals are obvious under 10X magnification.
